designer interview: jess abernethy.
Last night, after her amazing runway show - Jane + I were lucky enough to meet the designer Jess Abernethy.
And somehow - she managed to be just as amazing as her beautiful and inspiring Spring Line. She was also awesome enough to tell us a little about what her weeks have been leading up to her show ... and more about this incredible collection.
To prepare for Styleweek Providence I choose my inspiration and decide what direction I'm going to go in with the new collection. Then I start looking for fabrics and making my patterns. I usually end up going to New York City to buy about half of the fabric I use. I am a huge procrastinator so this all happens in the two months before a show, but who doesn't work better under pressure?!
The inspiration for this collection came from a Robert Delaunay painting, Hommage to Bleroit. It started with the colors but the more I looked at the painting it became the feeling I got from it. It made me think of Paris ca. 1920 and the US mid west in the summer time. I wanted to combine the sophisticated french look with the innocence of a mid west farm girl.
I feel like my clothing is made for the everyday girl. I create clothing that looks great from one season to the next and that makes you feel wonderful wearing it. I'm not about keeping up with trends, I make what I want when I want because I think it would be beautiful.
It was love at first sight with this collection ... and while Jess doesn't currently sell any of her pieces online - she does accept custom orders!
Jess -- thank you so much for sharing and thank you for creating such beautiful clothes for the everyday girl!
